Westchester runs on schedules. It sits next to the airport, a large share of the neighborhood works shifts that are not nine to five, and a lot of households here are juggling two working parents and school pickup. Finding lice on a Wednesday night is not something anyone has room in the calendar for.

The neighborhood

We cover Westchester across Kentwood, Loyola Village and the streets running toward Sepulveda and Manchester. Playa del Rey is over the hill to the west and Playa Vista sits north, both of which we work constantly, so appointments here fit into a normal route.

One visit, everyone in the house

We check every head rather than only the child who has been scratching. This is the single most important thing to get right. Lice moves between siblings within days, and adults commonly carry it for a couple of weeks with no symptoms worth noticing. A household that treats one child and stops usually sees the problem return.

Charging by the hour instead of per person is what makes checking everyone sensible. A clear head takes a few minutes and adds very little to the total. What actually lengthens a visit is hair volume and how long the infestation has been established before anyone spotted it.

Method

Treatment is manual combing. We take the hair in sections and work through it with a comb designed to strip eggs from the shaft, using an oil to loosen them first. No pesticide shampoo is involved. If you have already tried a drugstore kit without success you are in the majority, and it is not a reflection of how carefully you used it. The lice now common in California survive most of those products.
